Abstract In this article, we make use of large-scale municipal border changes in Germany to provide the first evidence on effect local distribution activity space. To allow for a comparison economic within unique geographical units over time, geo-coded light data as well land-use data. Applying difference-in-differences approach, find that municipalities absorbing their merger partners and hosting new administrative center experience significant increase activity, while are being absorbed losing decrease such activity.
